Massero alpine hut
The “Massero” alpine hut is located in the valley of Carcoforo, “ideal village of Italy – Airone 1994”. The structure, propriety of Alta Valsesia Natural Park, has been renewed in 1980 and enlarged in 2004. The accommodation facility has 20 beds with shared bathroom and showers. It offers bar service and the restaurant serves Valsesia typical dishes. The alpine hut is open on Saturdays and Sundays in June, July, and September, while it is open daily on August.
Thanks to its location, most wild local animals can be observed as well as chamois, marmots and, with a little luck, the slow twirl of the golden eagle.
Don’t panic, you will be here in a two-hours walk! Leaving the car park, you have to cross the bridge that leads to the villas of “Selva Bruna”. Once you get to the dirt road with the barrier, just follow it until you reach the concrete bridge from where the footpath starts (C.A.I. signpost n.113). Along the way, you will find some illustrative tables that describe the flora and fauna of the Natural Park. Once you reach “Alpe Chignolo”, where the actual ascent begins, passing through a dense forest of larch trees and then among the rhododendrons and blueberries, you will arrive at “Alpe Fornetto” and, in a short time, to “Massero” alpine hut. The young owners of the structure will be pleased to give you all the information to discover other paths and trails.
If you want to have a picnic, please remember to take your rubbish with you, because who is coming after your visit will find what you have left behind you. It is useful to bring always a windbreaker and some binoculars, so it will be easier to see chamois and marmots in the surrounding area of the alpine hut.
